Odoo Licensing
Odoo’s open-source ERP suite is expanding rapidly, and more organizations are choosing it to power their operations. With that growth, understanding Odoo’s licensing has become critical. Licensing terms vary between the Community and Enterprise editions, as well as between free and paid apps.
At Al Hodood Technologies, we work closely with certified Odoo partners to guide you through every licensing detail—ensuring you stay compliant and protected from future legal or cost issues.
Odoo Licensing
Enterprise License (Odoo Enterprise Edition v1.0)
The Odoo Enterprise edition is subscription-based and protected by its own v1.0 license. Running, modifying, or distributing the Enterprise code without a valid subscription is prohibited. User counts must match the subscription agreement, and only certified Odoo partners are permitted to modify or deploy the software outside a live production environment. Distribution, resale, or sublicensing of Enterprise or modified versions is not allowed. However, subscribers may install additional Odoo modules—whether from Odoo Apps or other sources—regardless of their license type.
Free App License
Free apps can be created for use with both Community and Enterprise editions. Enterprise subscribers may download and use free apps from the Odoo App Store under any license without additional fees. Developers targeting the Community edition may also publish free apps under any license, but core Community add-ons must remain LGPL v3.
Paid App License
Paid add-ons from the Odoo App Store require a purchase or written permission from the author. Similar to Enterprise, you cannot resell, distribute, modify, or sublicense these apps directly. You may, however, build new modules that depend on a paid add-on—as long as you don’t copy its code—and release those modules under a compatible license (e.g., LGPL, MIT).
Community License (LGPL v3)
The Odoo Community edition is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3 (LGPL v3), derived from the widely used GPL. This license allows you to run, modify, and distribute the software freely, provided that any distributed derivative of the core Community code remains under the same LGPL v3 license. New software you develop that merely uses the Community libraries can be distributed under any license—even closed source—while still complying with LGPL v3.
